COURSE INFORMATION

The Division of Continuing Dental Education in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Alberta offers two courses for the Dental Hygiene Refresher Course:

A five day course scheduled from Monday, April 30th to Friday, May 4th, 2018
A ten day course scheduled from Monday, April 30th to Friday, May 11th, 2018

FIVE DAY COURSE
The 5-day Dental Hygiene Refresher Course is designed for dental hygiene graduates who:

  • Have been out of practice for less than 5 years and are wishing to re-enter the dental hygiene workforce, or
  • Are currently in the workforce and seeking to upgrade their competencies.

This 5-day course will be comprised of a 4 hour didactic session reviewing the Dental Hygiene Process of Care, a 3 hour didactic session reviewing radiology theory, technique and interpretation, 3 hour pre-clinical component using dental mannequins, a 3 hour session reviewing radiographs on mannequins and six 3 hour clinical sessions devoted to providing treatment to clients. The course will include a one hour debriefing session at the completion of the 5-day course.

TEN DAY COURSE
The 10-day Dental Hygiene Refresher Course is designed for dental hygiene participants who:

  • Have been out of practice for more than 5 years, or
  • Have graduated from a dental hygiene program greater than 15 years ago.

This 10-day course will be comprised of a 3 hour didactic session reviewing the Dental Hygiene Process of Care, a 3 hour didactic session reviewing radiology theory, technique and interpretation, two 3 hour pre-clinical components using dental mannequins, two 3 hour sessions reviewing radiographs on mannequins and thirteen 3 hour clinical sessions devoted to providing treatment to clients. The course will conclude with a one hour debriefing session at the completion of the 10-day course.

BOTH 5-DAY AND 10- DAY COURSES
The courses will consist of individualized instruction and continuous assessment and evaluation of clinical procedures performed. Course participants are encouraged to interact with instructors throughout the course to maximize the mentoring and learning opportunities. It is expected that participants have received previous training and knowledge in instrumentation skills and have the ability to use an explorer, probe and a full complement of periodontal instruments (graceys, universals and sickles). Participants are also expected to have proper eye wear (corrective lenses are required to read and record probing depths and appropriate eye protection is required for infection prevention and control).

These courses do NOT re-certify participants in the delivery of local anesthesia nor do they guarantee that participants will acquire the necessary competencies for Entry to Practice as determined by the College of Registered Dental Hygienists of Alberta (CRDHA). Additional ducation and/or practice may be required by the CRDHA.

At the end of the course, the Course Coordinator will provide a report to the CRDHA Registrar for each participant who was required to complete the Refresher Course as a condition of registration, transfer to General membership, or reinstatement of registration with the CRDHA. The report will indicate whether or not those participants have successfully completed the course and will include any recommendations for further instruction or clinical practicum
that may be made by the Clinical Instructors and Course Coordinator.

TUITION
The cost per participant for the 5- day course is $2,650.00
The cost per participant for the 10-day course is $5,600.00

A minimum of 3 participants must be registered for the 5 day course to be offered. If less than three (3) participants register, the course may be offered but the cost of the course increases to $3,375 per participant for 2 participants and $6,750 per participant if only 1 participant registers.
