COURSE INFORMATION:

DESCRIPTION
Inhalation sedation with nitrous oxide has proven to be an effective and safe technique for the reduction of stress in the apprehensive or anxious individual.

STRUCTURE
This Three-Day Course includes new course curriculum as required by the ADA&C.  Course content includes both didactic and practical hands on participation involving the administration of nitrous-oxide/oxygen inhalation and oral sedation. It is useful for practitioners who want to feel comfortable in utilizing this particular modality in their office. Upon successful completion of this course, registered Alberta dental hygienists will be eligible to apply for placement on the CRDHA nitrous oxide/oxygen conscious sedation roster.

NEW
As of Fall 2011, participants will be required to purchase the textbook “Sedation: A Guide to Patient Management” 5th Ed., by Dr. Stanley F. Malamed ISBN: 978-0-323-05680-9. The textbook can be purchased from the University of Alberta Bookstore at 780-492-4215 for approximately $100. Some pre-reading/pre-study will be assigned prior to your attendance at the course.


To meet the potential need from the dentist and dental hygienist profession in the appropriate setting,  course sizes are limited and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

DIDACTIC AND CLINICAL SESSION FORMAT
DAY ONE is a prerequisite for Day Two.

Day One will focus on Dental Sedation:
• Patient selection and history
• Patient evaluation and monitoring
• Medical emergency management
• Discharge considerations

DAY TWO will focus on:
• Nitrous Sedation (Course participants will serve as each other’s patients)
• Program Participant Assessment:   Will include Clinical Performance Competencies & a Multiple Choice Written Exam

ORAL SEDATION AND ORAL/NITROUS COMBINED
DAY THREE for DDS and DMD only (Optional) (7 hours of CE credit is available) Day One and Two are a prerequisite. 

Day Three will focus on:
• Oral Sedation and Nitrous Oral Sedation combined lecture
• Multiple Choice Written Exam

SPEAKERS
DR. SARANJEEV S. LALH, B.SC., D.D.S., M.D., F.R.C.D(C) received his Dental degree from University of Alberta in 1994 and his Medical degree from the Medical College of Pennsylvania in 2008. He completed two years of General Surgery training followed by completion of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery program from Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh in 2001. Dr. Lalh received his Fellowship status of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada in 2002.  Dr. Lalh then went on to pursue academics by becoming the Director of Oral and  Maxillofacial Surgery and the Co-Director of the Dental Implant Clinic at the University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry from 2001 to 2007. He now continues teaching on a part time basis as a Clinical Professor. He founded Renew Oral & Facial Surgical Centre, a private certified non-hospital surgical centre in 2005. He has subsequently transitioned from academics into full time private practice, devoting his clinical practice to implant surgery, dentoalveolar surgery, facial reconstructive and orthognathic surgery, and cosmetic facial plastic surgery.   He was recently appointed the Oral and Maxillofacial Reconstruction Surgeon at the internationally recognized clinical and research Institute for Reconstructive Sciences in Medicine (iRSM) at the Misercordia Hospital and Covenant Health, dealing with reconstruction of patient’s with head and neck cancer. Dr. Lalh also continues to conduct evidence based research through the University of Alberta and has had the opportunity to lecture extensively both nationally and internationally on various surgical topics. His special interest is using new technological advances in digital imaging for reconstructive surgical procedures. Dr. Saranjeev Lalh is a member of many professional organizations. He is involved in various healthcare committees in the Alberta Health Services in the Edmonton Zone Medical Staff Association Committee and the Zone Medical Staff Association.  Nationally, he is involved in the Canadian Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery  Cosmetic Surgery Special Interest Group, and a member at large on the CAOMS Foundation. Dr. Lalh is married and has two children. He enjoys his personal time with his family by bicycling, golfing, and hiking.

DR. WILLIAM PRESHING, DDS   Dr. Preshing graduated from the University of Alberta with his DDS . He completed a postgrad Diploma in Health Science Administration in 1994. He is a Fellow of the American Association of Hospital Dentists, and a Diplomate of the American Board of Special Care Dentistry.  Bill is also the Director of the University of Alberta Hospital Dental Clinic, and is Director of the University of Alberta Dental Residency Program.  His practice has been limited to disabled and medically-compromised patients since 1991. Bill teaches as a clinical instructor in the IV Conscious Sedation Program and contributes to lectures, and CE programs on medically challenged patients.

MARTHE BENOIT, RDH is a CRDHA Practice Advisor, a position she has held since May 2014. Some of her duties include providing guidance and advice to CRDHA members regarding matters relating to CRDHA Practice Standards, guidelines, competencies and the CRDHA Code of Ethics. Marthe write a practice advice column for the CRDHA InTouch newsletter and liaises on specific CRDHA special projects. Over her 16 year career as a dental hygienist, Marthe has practiced in varied locations and settings including living and practicing in the high Arctic for four years. Ms. Benoit has also served as a Councillor on the CRDHA Council for one year. She completed her Bachelor of Dental Science Degree from UBC in 2014. Since 2016 she has been affiliated with the UofA Nitrous Program.
