Additional learning activities may be included to supplement and guide the individual home study portion. Participants will review the dental hygiene process of care, including dental hygiene assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation and evaluation. Participants must successfully complete the Quality Assurance Test offered by the National Dental Hygiene Certification Board by April 15, 2019.
REMEDIAL CLINICAL COMPONENTS
This six week clinical course will be comprised of didactic sessions reviewing infection prevention & control, the dental hygiene process of care, radiology theory, technique and interpretation. Pre-clinical sessions using dental mannequins will review the proficient use of the explorer, probe, gracey curettes, universal curettes, sickle scalers and power instrumentation, and common dental radiography techniques. Participants will be required to demonstrate proficient use of each of the instruments in pre-clinical assessments prior to progressing to clinical care.
Clinical sessions will be devoted to providing dental hygiene care to clients in the Kaye Edmonton Clinic. Participants will provide care for a variety of patients with varying degrees of calculus and periodontal health complexities. All instruments and patients will be provided by the department. Clinical sessions will include both learning opportunities and formal assessments of participant performance.
The clinical course will consist of individualized instruction with low student to instructor ratios (no more than 4:1) including continuous assessment and evaluation of clinical procedures performed. Participants are expected to have proper clinical attire and safety eyewear or loupes.
